Four-Player Close the Box Dice Game Rules | How to Play Step by Step

Objective: Be the first player to flip down all numbered tiles on your panel — closing your box — before any other player does the same.

Setup

• Place the square Close the Box board in the center of the table with all numbered tiles (1–9) flipped up on each of the 4 player panels.
• Each player sits at one side of the board facing their own numbered tile panel.
• Decide which player goes first — youngest player or coin toss. Play passes clockwise.

Turn Sequence

1. Roll the Dice: The active player rolls both dice and adds the two numbers together to get a total sum.
2. Flip Tiles: The player must flip down one or more numbered tiles on their own panel that add up exactly to the dice sum. For example, rolling a 9 allows flipping down 9, or 5+4, or 6+3, or 1+2+6, etc.
3. Strategic Choice: Players choose which combination of tiles to flip — planning ahead to leave the most useful numbers available for future rolls is key to winning.
4. Single Die Option: Once tiles 7, 8, and 9 are all flipped down on a player’s panel, that player may choose to roll only one die per turn instead of two.
5. No Valid Move: If a player cannot make any valid tile combination from their dice roll, their turn ends with no tiles flipped. Play passes clockwise to the next player.
6. Pass Turn: After resolving the roll, the turn passes clockwise to the next player.

Winning

The first player to flip down all numbered tiles on their panel shouts “Close the Box!” and wins the round. For multi-round play, score remaining open tile numbers — lowest cumulative score after the agreed number of rounds wins!
