Beer Bottle Dice is a social drinking party game for 2–8 players that combines classic D&D dice with a fate-flipping coin mechanic. Each round, the active player flips a D2 coin — a Pass ends their turn, while a Drink triggers a Character Die roll to determine who takes the sips. The chosen player then rolls the D3 Sip Die to decide how many sips to take (1–3). Fast to learn, endlessly replayable, and built for groups who love tabletop vibes with a party twist.
Components – Tools of Fate
- D2 Coin (Drink / Pass) — Fate Coin
- D3 Die — Sip Die
- 7 Standard D&D Dice (D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, D20, D%) — Character Dice
Player Count – The Fellowship Size
2–8 players (optimal experience: 4–6 players)
Core Gameplay (3 steps per Turn) – Three Trials of a Turn
All players sit in a circle and take turns clockwise. Each round starts with the active player.
Step 1: Fate Coin (D2) – Toss with Destiny
The active player flips the D2 coin:

- Pass: Nothing happens. Pass the turn directly to the next player.
- Drink: A penalty is triggered. Proceed to Step 2.
Step 2: Roll the Character Die – Cast the Lots
Players may freely select any suitable Character Die to use. The table below provides suggested options.
Pick the matching Character Die based on the number of players. Count clockwise starting with the D2 coin roller as Player 1. The player matching the rolled number must drink. Re-roll any result greater than the total number of players.
| Number of Players | Die Selection Guide | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| 2 players | D3 (Exclusive!) | Rolls 1–2 are valid; re-roll on 3–4 |
| 3 players | D3 (Exclusive!) | Roll directly for results 1–3 |
| 4 players | D4 | Roll directly for results 1–4 |
| 5 players | D6 | Rolls 1–5 are valid; re-roll on 6 |
| 6 players | D6 | Roll directly for results 1–6 |
| 7 players | D8 | Rolls 1–7 are valid; re-roll on 8 |
| 8 players | D8 | Roll directly for results 1–8 |
Step 3: Roll the Sip Die – Roll for Damage
The selected player rolls the D3 to set the number of sips:
- Roll a 1 = 1 sip
- Roll a 2 = 2 sips
- Roll a 3 = 3 sips
After finishing the drink, the turn passes to the next player, who re-rolls the D2 to start a new round.
Game End
The game wraps up when drinks run out, time is up (30–60 minutes recommended), or everyone has had their fill. There are no fixed winners — the whole point is to have fun! Feel free to create custom house rules as you play; adjust the game however your group likes and enjoy Beer Bottle Dice to the fullest.

Variant Rules – House Rule Expansions
Want to spice things up? Try one of these official variant modes to change the pace and add new twists to your session.
🔥 Variant 1: Double Jeopardy
When the D2 lands on Drink, the active player rolls the Character Die twice. Both players indicated must drink. If the same number comes up twice, that player drinks double the sips rolled on the D3.
⚡ Variant 2: Chain Reaction
After a player is selected to drink and rolls the D3, they immediately flip the D2 coin themselves. If it lands on Drink again, the chain continues — they roll the Character Die to pass the penalty to another player. The chain ends only when the D2 lands on Pass.
🎯 Variant 3: The Sniper (D20 Mode)
Replace the Character Die with the D20 for the entire session. Assign each player a unique number range (e.g., Player 1 = 1–2, Player 2 = 3–4, etc.). Any roll outside all assigned ranges is a re-roll. This mode adds suspense and works best with 4–8 players.
👑 Variant 4: King’s Decree
Once per game, any player who rolls a natural 1 on the D3 Sip Die may declare a “King’s Decree” — a custom rule that applies for the next 3 rounds (e.g., “everyone must drink with their non-dominant hand” or “no one can say the word ‘drink’”). Breaking the decree means taking an extra sip.
🌀 Variant 5: Chaos Mode
Remove the Character Die entirely. After a Drink result on the D2, all players roll the D3 simultaneously and drink their individual results. Fast, chaotic, and best reserved for experienced groups.
Frequently Asked Questions
▶ Q: What do I need to play Beer Bottle Dice?
A: You need the D2 Fate Coin, the D3 Sip Die, and at least one Character Die (D4, D6, D8, etc. depending on player count). All components are included in the Bear Dice set.
▶ Q: How many people can play?
A: The game supports 2–8 players. For the best experience, we recommend 4–6 players.
▶ Q: What happens if the Character Die rolls a number higher than the player count?
A: Simply re-roll. Only results within the range of your player count are valid.
▶ Q: Why is the D3 marked “Exclusive” for 2–3 players?
A: The D3 is the only die that works cleanly for small groups. For 2 players, rolls of 3–4 are re-rolled; for 3 players, all results 1–3 are valid with no re-roll needed.
▶ Q: Can we make our own house rules?
A: Absolutely — that’s encouraged! The ruleset is a starting framework. Feel free to add challenges, penalties, or bonus rounds to suit your group’s style.
▶ Q: Is there a winner at the end?
A: No. Beer Bottle Dice is a social party game with no fixed winner. The goal is shared fun, not competition.
▶ Q: How long does a typical game last?
A: Most sessions run 30–60 minutes, but you can play as long as drinks last or the group wants to continue.
▶ Q: Can I play without alcohol?
A: Yes! Substitute any beverage of your choice — soda, juice, or water all work perfectly. The mechanics are the same regardless of what’s in the cup.
